As we head into the holiday weekend, I know many of us do not feel like celebrating the “land of the free” (although many of us never really celebrated, we just were happy to have a day off work), but I implore you to examine what July 4th means to the Black community by listening to the voices of Frederick Douglass’ descendants as they read from his infamous speech, “What to the Slave is The Fourth of July?” We need to continue teaching the true fight for freedom in America. Why? Because the fight is still happening…
Now I encourage you to READ the speech itself, ALL OF IT, so you can see how much work is STILL needed today because his words STILL ring true. We need to educate our children with the FULL history of our country, along with how we can move forward.
I wasn’t going to do a post for Fourth of July, but it amazes me how we are in the year of 2020 and even with all of the information available, with all of the tools we have at our disposal to EDUCATE ourselves, and not be entirely influenced with messaging from social media or from the media, there are still those who do not understand what their privilege is. Even in my own neighborhood, I am learning just how much white people are really trying to blind themselves to the injustices that keep occurring when it comes to the socioeconomic status of those who have been oppressed since before this country was even founded.
